Fueling creativity with playful pure soul energy
How to find pure souls in an artificial world.
Sunny D
This week I traveled from Australia to Dubai. A contrast that was dizzying. From barefoot, overgrown farm life to a highly manicured, perfected city.
My first steps into Dubai felt like drinking Sunny D on a hot day, thinking it was PURE orange juice. Only to flip the bottle over and read the nutrition label to find out I’m drinking artificial sweeteners, chemicals, and 2% orange concentrate. Sunny D had me craving pure pulp-filled orange juice.
Left me feeling emptied out, hollow, and ungrounded—in search of depth and substance in an artificial world.
Thankfully, I am only here for a few days, hanging with my long-distance best friend to fulfill our lifetime desire to see Coldplay.
Part of my rant to her, was that the word pure keeps coming up for me.
From my creative friends in NYC, a wise elder at Burning Man, to the mystical mountaintops of Machu Picchu. I know they aren’t referring to the Merriam-Webster definition of pure, purified, or purebred. They are describing an elusive energy.
Magic of Pure Souls.
Pure souls are peace and presence. It feels like you are being hugged with their words, their presence, their passion. Pure love interwoven in everything that they do. Stirs creativity and curiosity. It’s magnetic.
We often see this characteristic in kids as they discover the world. It’s a childlike innocence and curiosity. Which is infectious but clearly hard to maintain as weathered and hardened adults.
But some have matured, maintaining their pure soul energy, like Bob Marley, Rosa Parks, and Bella Hadid. Even Chris Martin of Coldplay is a pure soul, with a pure essence. All pure love. The way he leads his life radiates kindness, compassion, and curiosity for living.
What is so inspiring about pure soul energy?
It is inspiring to witness someone come alive with passion. Seeing their eyes light up with an intensity while they are bursting with energy to talk, create, and take action. It’s an energy fit for creation. Their passion and enthusiasm are contagious.
I’ve found these elusive pure souls—not only limited to artists and yoga instructors on a whole-ness journey. I have found adults with pure souls in corporate offices, cold climates, club bathrooms, and furniture store openings. We are out here.
Why now?
As a creative, its important to nurture one’s soul to create meaningful work. For me this means living a life that is curious, self-led, and challenging.
This year I took a pledge to create more that fills my soul. Postponing self-judgement till next year. Bye inner cunt of a critic. Actively choosing to curiously see the world through innocent eyes. Just like a kid: ask questions, create, and grow. Sharing my messy journey along the way here on Sundays and daily on insta.
Pure Souls are NOT.
Let’s clear out the existing limited definitions.
Pure souls are not free of imperfections. They are full of accepted flaws.
Pure souls are not extra. They’re not unnecessary fluff. They are someone who is living in pursuit of their truth.
Pure souls, not purity. Not a religious container for those that do no wrong.
That is unrealistic. Flawed friends to the front.Pure souls are not pureblood purebreds. As a biracial girl from Memphis, my big curly hair and I have always stood out. It has never been my desire to ever be purified into one thing. The pure you is a unique blend of genetics and
trauma drama.
What are Pure Souls?
Pure souls are wholesome. Contain substance, not empty hollowness.
They don’t have to be full but are hearty.Pure souls lead with their hearts. Exuding an essence that is pure love and compassion. Not always nice, but kind.
Pure souls are like raw milk: not perfect but diverse, free of chemicals that make them more digestible, have a longer shelf life, and sellable to a wider audience.
Pure souls are rose-colored glasses. Seeing the goodness in humanity while acknowledging the shadows.
Pure souls = pure body. High on life. Striving to be intentionally free from toxicity. (including but not limited to experience-altering substances)
Pure souls are giving without expecting anything in return. Void of transactions.
Pure souls acknowledge that rules are there for guidance, a choice to be better.
Pure souls are not a copy-paste of someone else. They follow their own path.
Pure souls are not pushovers. Direct, not malicious.
Cultivating this Energy
Having a pure soul is a characteristic that can be cultivated. In a creative pursuit, we can create the container for this energy to happen by living life playfully.
Here are a few other ways to invite this energy:
Ignite the senses by dancing out stagnant energy or tasting something new to truly feel out a passionate emotion.
Having a passionate conversation with someone by asking, “What lights you up?” “What made you curious today?” “What have you recently learned?”
Be around other pure souls who inspire you.
Being around others with pure soul energy can be creatively freeing because you are no longer bearing the weight to inspire them and yourself. You are living presently.
Some say the more time alone you have, the more you will discover about yourself. This may be the case with some, but I believe there is power in collective creativity and collective healing. You feed each other soulfood.
There are some mutualistic relationships that creatively nurture the soul. Where your passionate energy fuels you both. It’s an equal give/take-to-give/take balance. Continuously inspiring each other to create more like Newton’s cradle. Which is why schools, retreats, and workshops are a thing.
It takes courage to be live expressively and live out loud. While being honest with yourself and living with integrity. Inspiring to witness someone own their unique signature, scent, and story. That courage to be can be empowering.
